Default Any Thoughts on the National Geographic Maksutov????

I would not be surprised if the NG scope is not the same thing, just
re-badged and "profitized". National Geographic is not exactly known
for their bargains.

Actually I wondered the same thing but it is clearly a different scope, it has
a flip mirror setup whereas the Orion scope uses a visual back or some such
thing.

Default What if the National Geographic Maksutov was $200.00????

What if the NG Maksutov without Tripod was under $200.00 USD?

Would this change the opinions?

better get a Konus from the same online store or from Digitec Optical.
They sell a 5" Mak , which has the same 45 and 90 deg built in diagonal,
with the same mount as the Orion Skyview Pro, for less money than the Orion
5" Mak and less money than this puny 90mm Mak.
Funny how this www.telescopes.com company sets their online prices ,yhey
have a $200 90mm Mak and a $500 90mm Mak and it seems the same scope , but
check out this site:
http://www.digitecoptical.com/tele-mak.htm
and you'll find the same 90mm for around $200 , then 2 different 5" Maks in
the $500 range with good mounts for the price , and a 6" Mak with a good
mount for $775. Of course good is a relative word for this pricerange but
the mounts have steel tubular legs and seem the same product as the new
Celestron Advanced series (the non-goto) and the Orion SkyviewPro .

best regards,
Matt Tudor

That price is outrages $587+shp, you can buy OTA at Ebay, new for $175, as I
did. Nice scope, all plastic, sold it, because I have a TV Pronto and I like
wide field views and refractors, Pronto is built like a tank.
Apogee sells the ETX 90 RA for $170, including the base, much cheaper, if
you want to mess around with Maks.
If you want to spend $600 for a small scope, there is the Orion 80 ED
refractor $450, Megrez 80 ED, used TV Ranger or Pronto $500, you'll be much
happier and much better quality telescopes. No central obstruction, wide
field of wiew (Pronto 5.5 deg), high power 200-300x or more, close focus for
birding, lowest power is 9x.

Made in China, I owned it for a short while. All plastic, including the
tube. Same OTA as the Konus 90 Mak, repackaged for Nat. Geog.

Good God !!!! It's an octopus ! Look at all those limbs hanging out !
^_^

Seriously, depends on where the optics are manufacturered, both the
telescope and the acessories. The mount is obviously geared for visual

use
only, so that's what you're going to use it for. However, being only

90mm,
don't expect large views of the planets; you can only push the

magnification
up to around 80 to 100 or so.

Junk. The same as the Celestron 4". Get the ETX or Orion.

Orion (US) sells a 10-inch Dobsonian for about the same price.

Expecting 200-300x from an 80mm objective is ludicrous.

200x would be the absolute max, and then only with perfect seeing.

That's "BS". I can do 150-200x with my TV Pronto on a bad seeing night on
planets. I had 3" f/15 old Edscorp refractor, that I was able to push to
400x on a good seeing night.
Looks like, you never owned a good quality refractor, DOB guy.
