While legitimate disagreements are almost guaranteed, there is certainly no need to resort

A solution - the kill file. A beneficial result of which is I no longer see any posts

from Kelleher, Oriel, and others who are incapable of remaining civil or just carry on

with what others accept as being incorrect.

On the other hand - have learned much from many group members, which outnumber the cranks,

The kill file is your friend!

Of course you soon discover that once you post on any topic then you leave yourself open without being able to reply so it never serves the killfiler or whatever you call yourselves but rather serves the 'killfiled' respondee.. A killfile sounds great in principle but merely displays intellectual cowardice and a lack of political maturity.

The old saying applies - if you can't stand the heat...

Hello Doug,

Thanks for your agreement and you're right, but I'll ramp up your first
sentence to; [disagreements on the group are *always* guaranteed.]

However, it's not the personal insults I was objecting to but the
language used in those insults. I've been on Usenet for a long time and
know how free wheeling it is. However, after one short use of kill
filing many years ago, I ceased that filtering - so much gets missed
that I felt if I had to use kill files, I might as well abandon the
group. Not the case here.

Again, thank you.

Best regards,
Bert

To be clear, this isn't really a science newsgroup, and hasn't been
for years. If you're interested in astronomy, this isn't really the
place to come for information. This is a sort of free-for-all forum
where the participants happen to be amateur astronomers. And unless
something changes to bring Usenet back into the mainstream of the
Internet (very unlikely), I don't expect that to change.

Best place on the internet and nothing like the sterile consumerist forums which are almost childish imitations of a real forum. You don't get any badges or awards, academics are no longer head of the class here and you post empirical propaganda at your own peril.

Hello Chris,

You're right, it's not really a science newsgroup, but it is an amateur
group and I've been grateful for the rapid imparting of information the
members have provided in response to my questions. I think Usenet is
still viable - look at you and me chatting here, eh? (that's Canadian
for "right?" grin) Twitter is text based - Usenet may just find a
resurgence if folks like you and I keep using it.

Seriously, thank you for your time in replying.

Best regards,
Bert

I'd like to have my wife and a couple of my kids participate here since
we're trying to learn about astronomy, but the crap that gets posted
here is beyond anything they'd hear at one of our union picnics.

I always thought that I and the guys I work with had no class. You all
make us look like a bunch of pikers. Would love to get one of you on the
sidehill or in a tunnel sometime, see what you're really made of..

Not so best regards,
Bert

Be proud of yourself and your colleagues. You have a real job and a
family. There's no chance on the face of this earth the twits
monopolizing this group have either. Outside of some sort of handout
from the public purse they would starve. They wouldn't last more than a
few minutes in the real world you live in.

As for astronomy they prefer to just discuss it here. Few actually
participate in anything unless it involves the internet. At best they
will go outside and look at the sky for a few minutes then sit down in
front of their computer and spend several hours describing the
experience to a few internet buddies that don't even bother to look up
at the sky.

A good place to get your family into astronomy is the NightSkiesNetwork

http://www.nightskiesnetwork.com/

The network is a group of real people that regularly broadcast their
observing sessions. They use a wide variety of equipment. Some like
yourself are just getting involved in astronomy, some are experienced.
In many cases the broadcasters are learning more from their audience
than the other way around.

LsD is a troll and a hypocrite. Notice that he accuses people on this forum of using the Internet instead of actually looking at the sky, yet he then goes on to post a link....on the Internet!

A good way to get your family into astronomy is to just get a scope, binos and some star maps and go out and LOOK at the night sky on your own. Then please come back and tell us about what you saw and did.

Try taking a look at the sky yourself. I don't think you have ever
posted a message about your observations. Thousands of posts about
everything else.

Observing should be a real treat for you. You are so narrow minded you
can look through an eyepiece with both eyes at the same time.

By the way the NightSkysNetwork has been exceptionally busy lately. If
you ever tear yourself away from responding to every thread on this
forum and who knows how many other forums give it a look.

Cloudy skies making use of the telescope useless, I watched the video and
saw a cascade of still images too fast to study, and heard a background of
crap noise suitable for someone on crack cocaine to listen to. After one
minute I fast forwarded only to find more of the same. NSN went in my
poisonous sites list.
