Florida is a rogue nation of GOP/ZNR rednecks. And come to think of it, the following train of events show the depths of political and economic depravity of South Florida in particular. The Everglades in South Florida created a limited amount of land for new construction. And that shortage started a quick escalation of home prices. As it heated up, all kinds of crooked ideas for mortgages sprang up. People started 'day trading' mortgages down here. It spread and got out of control. Leading to perhaps the greatest economic blunder of all time. The massive rescue bill of the banking and mortgage industries. Which resulted in the collapse of the stock market. A long national recession, and world-wide depression follows, that'll probably last another five years or so. Really, in all honesty, the US should invade ...South Florida if we wish to maintain peace and prosperity for all. s |

I thought the Europeans were crazy flying two telescopes on a single Ariane 5 to L1, but those didn't have complex mechanisms to deploy. Why didn't they just build another Hubble, bigger and better, but serviceable robotically with replaceable batteries and reaction wheels or something? How big a telescope can one fit inside a Atlas V or Falcon Heavy anyway? Surely something Hubble-sized would fit, right? I keep wondering if the fact that the JWST was to be launched on a Ariane V is playing any part in it maybe getting axed? Pat |

The total cost of JWST is the equivalent of two weeks Iraq's war (6.5 billion vs around 12 billion per month for Iraq) Now the U.S. will be able to go on spending for two weeks more! GREAT! The total cost is also 7% of the AIG bailout. Now the U.S. will be able to throw a bit MORE money to those companies. THAT is money well spent. Stop spending in astronomy, science, etc. Who cares what lies beyond? Astronomy has no practical significance. How many dead Iraqis has the Hubble scope brought us? There wasn't a single dead person because of Hubble, nothing was destroyed. This is an unsustainable path and must be scrapped immediately. |
