I would try some silicone lubricant, available at many dive shops. It's very
smooth, resists extremes of weather, and I've used it myself on the focuser
of one of my refractors, after I removed the nasty glue-like "grease" that
was originally used. Works like a charm.

Your Side Saddle Mount has been used quite extensively by others for many
years..

I fugured it was something that other people were doing but I had never seen
any other reference to it. I just came up with the name so to help explain how
it works.
I think Side Saddle Mount is explanatory, but obviously I better leave the
Jon's part out.

I don't remember the details, but basically you just unscrew the
obvious screws and pull. I repacked mine with lithium grease,
which seems to work pretty well.

Hi Jon. This makes perfect sense to me. I used to carry & support my camera
with big lens this way: what you call side-saddle via a ballhead on a monopod.
Extremely steady, but I never gave it much thought!

Could you email me the additional pictures you mentioned? Or post them on
Astromart perhaps?

Wonder how well this would work with ultra-lightweight tripod & head... I'm
going to look for a magnesium head to try out on my (in the mail) CF tripod.
