Try this instead:

N=R*fs*fp*ne*fl*fi*fc*L

Bonus points for the first to recognize the above equation. [Hint: It's
semi-topical]

I know what it is, but I will recuse myself because I've
discussed this when teaching introductory astronomy classes...
the question is just ducky, though.

The Frank Drake Equation. You want me to explain it?

Well done. By all means.

Like Brian, maybe I should have recused myself. It was explained to me
by no less an authority on the matter than Frank Drake himself. Also
like Brian, I occasionally used it in classes. A simple Google search
(Drake + equation) will bring up several pages of explanations.

Drake was keynote speaker at an astronomy conference our museum was
hosting way back in '76 or '77. A pleasant man with a right-sized ego,
and one of the best speakers we ever had.

But what I remember most about Frank Drake is his wife- an elegant and
beautiful woman. I was single at the time, the room was dark, and I was
sitting next to her. I kept thinking "I wonder what her reaction would
be if I put my hand on her knee?"

I'm joking- actually I wasn't sitting with her- Joe Bergeron (a regular
here) was. I think he will attest to her latin good looks.....

Hmmm.........

My first response hasn't appeared in several hours, at least on my
server, so I'll try again.

Like Brian I've occasionally used the formula in classes, but I first
saw it back in the '60s, then had it explained to me by no less an
authority than Frank Drake himself. Rather than (perhaps poorly)
explaining it here, anyone who's interested might simply do a google
search (Drake + equation). There are several good pages about it.
Remember, 'Google is your friend'.......

Frank Drake is a charming guy, with a right-sized ego, considering all
his accomplishments. He was also the keynote speaker at our museum in
the mid '70s. But what I remember most about him is his wife! A
graceful and spectacular latin beauty who could make anyone feel as
though they were a life-long friend. At the time I was single, sitting
next to her in a darkened room, her husband was occupied at the moment,
and the thought suddenly occured to me- 'How would she react if I put my
hand on her knee?'.........eeek!

I'm joking- actually it was Joe Bergeron (another regular here) that sat
next to her. I'm sure he still remembers her fondly too!!

Starry Skies,
Rich

PS:
I hope your return address was a 'real' one.

Uh, it's a real one, but it may not be mine. Did it arrive yet?

Arrived yesterday- look for a package of your own.

I'll be looking for a *really* long time if you used that return
address, Rich. Hopefully, it will return to sender; address unknown!

You DIP..........

Granted, but didn't the name on the return address provide even a modest
hint that something wasn't quite Koshuh? It was the Stella Adler School
of Emoting, Rich...come on now!

Seriously, very sorry about mix up -- you shoulda contacted me by email
first -- but I did say I didn't want nuttin' in return, and I do means
what I say. Anyway, we'll get it squared away... Sorry. Truly. Forgive
me? Please?

I *DID* ask you in another thread if you included a return address. You
simply responded something like 'yeah.' I assumed the school was bogus,
but figured the mail carrier would realize you smoke a hookah. That's
it- no more- if it ever gets back here, the antique Motashan Kashan will
just go back in my living room!

Is it applied as a cream or a gel?
