Ever see the cool looking supercritical wing test F8? Or is this the one

...Pat here has violated sci.space.history's 3rd Rule: When
referencing something "neat-o", "cool-looking" or

Shame on you, Flannery. You know better.

Not him, you.

Everyone knows that you can see photos of Dryden aircraft in the
gallery at www.dfrc.nasa.gov.

And if you're going to plead that you didn't know the SCW was a Dryden
airplane, who else would do it?

....You miss the point, Mary. If you're going to talk about a whiz-bang
gadget, at least provide a link to a photo. It's not that difficult.

If memory serves, the Crusader had a single bulge -- one side only --
because its otherwise quite skillful designers had somehow neglected to
provide space for a retractable flight-refueling probe, and somewhere
between the design freeze and the production order, the USN decided to
insist on having one.

This one is further down on the fuselage though, it may be an attempt to
get smooth airflow over where the cannon muzzle bulges were.

I think you mean QF-8L. The designator for drones is Q and the hyphen
is part of the reformed designations system, which was put in place
just before the F-8 came online.

I've found references to both designations on the web; at least some of
them were used in the Regulus II test program.
There doesn't seem to be much info on them; either they were used on
some semi-classified programs, or just weren't considered interesting
enough to write much about.

The external probe is for airplanes like the A-6, not for the
fighters. The F-8 went Mach 1.4, so there's no way they'd put a fixed
external probe on it.

Some F-100s carried a fixed external probe on the wing

It might be the gun, though.

It's in the area just astern of where the twin cannon muzzles would be
on the side of the aircraft...here's a thought... is it a "Dagmar" like
on the tail of the F-102 to get the proper area rule effect for the
supercritical wings different size compared to the normal F8 wing?
Here's the aerial shot showing the bulge off to good advantage:

I just answered my own question...look at the side of the fuselage _aft_
of the wing; there's another bulge scabbed onto the fuselage back there
also; the bulges are to get the optimal area-ruled shape for minimal
supersonic transition drag, necessary due to the wing's large size at
the fuselage juncture.

OK, now it's your turn to provide URLs.

I should mention that the F-8 SCW wasn't the only supercritical wing
we tested at Dryden. We also flew one on the F-111 TACT (Transonic
AirCraft Technology). We flew a supercritical wing on the AFTI/F-111
MAW (Mission Adaptive Wing) but that was testing the continuously
variable camber, not the supercritical wing. Roughly speaking, the
F-111 TACT was 10% better than the standard F-111. The AFTI/F-111 MAW
was 10% better than the F-111 TACT. Incidentally, both programs used
the same aircraft and the MAW used the same wing box, so the
comparison was pretty direct.

Let me for the new kids in the newsgroup! From an olde posting....

They are all dead drunk down at the Sappho Speakeasy, and dancing
wildly. They, like the Pterodactyl Corps, are just flappers at heart.
Here we see Banggalore getting ready to mix the planet's driest martini:

The crew of The First spaceship On Venus were greeted enthusiastically:

....until the girls discovered that the Earthmen have no intention of
putting the moves on them:

Meanwhile, under Venus' storm-swept skies, two of the Venusian Zebra Men
debate whether they are white, with black stripes, or black....with an
attitude:

What would Venus be without a fashion show? Here Boobalator shows us
what the the well-dressed Firewoman will be wearing this season - the
helmet can double as a Tyrannosaurus Rex condom; and considering the
size of the T-Rex's ejaculation, the term "reservoir tip" is no
exaggeration:

What Firewoman hasn't made the mistake of trying to dye her own hair at
least once...only to see this in the mirror?:

As Grand Brassiere of Venus, Vulvator knows that no girl is truly
complete without a big box:

But it is time we bid adieu to that morning star of our imaginations,
and the ever-enthralling women who inhabit it... we climb aboard the
Clitatron class battle cruiser:

....and accept the traditional farewell gift to departing spacefarers,
presented by Vulvator herself- a Venusian triple penetration vibrator:
