Unfortunately, it's also vastly harder. Not only are the distances and the delta-V requirements much larger, but Europa is deep in Jupiter's very nasty Van Allen belts. If there is a water source, that means humans can survive there for extended periods...without as constant a stream of supplies. Liquid water on (in) Europa may be many kilometers down. The only water we know for sure is available on the surface is ice... and there's pretty definitely ice just below the surface over large areas of Mars. It's not obvious that Europa is really any better, even ignoring the considerations noted above. -- MOST launched 30 June; science observations running | Henry Spencer since Oct; first surprises seen; papers pending. | |

Reaganomics kicked in, tax revenues went up, the economy recovered quite nicely from the Carter Malaise, the Soviet Union got spent into oblivion. A true path to failure would be if Bush came down with "Alright, let's go to the moon using modernized Apollo capsules launched atop Atlas V's, with trans-lunar injection stages made from Centaur stages and an all-new lunar lander of the design seen in figure 43, all assembled at the new space station composed of Shuttle ETs as shown in figure 44..." dr.o@xxxxx.? writes Mars probes, the space telescopes, the Discovery missions - would continue, but would they cut the more expensive deep space missions such as Pluto Express or to Mercury or Jupiter? I hope not, but we shall see. I would hate to see Pluto Express get scrapped. I would like to see a close-up snapshot of Pluto in my lifetime. Likewise. What would be considered the 'most important' unmanned missions in the planning or construction stages at the moment? (I'm assuming that all missions actually in progress e.g. Cassini/Huygens would be protected)? How high up the list would Pluto Express or JIMO be? -- Graeme Carrott Membership Secretary/Treasurer, Air North http://www.airnorth.demon.co.uk/ |
