The nice part about the original links was that they could be followed
without
being a member of the group. My thanks to whoever set that up!

At one time, any air-glass surface was bad for refractors. Updates to the
process have apparently reduced the [performance] cost to point where
AP considers it possible to implement an air-spaced 6" APO; that,
as opposed to the current 155 which uses, IIRC, oil-spacing. The nice part
of this, I assume, is that the amount of figuring that is needed is reduced
quite a bit. More of them can be made in the same amount of time --
answering John's issue.
