Oddly enough, that was the first thought that occurred to me also... would a Kazak rancher pull something like this? Nah, they are honest as the day is long... at Murmansk on the Winter Solstice. :-) Pat |

Nearly 6,800+ of the strap-on boosters over the years (almost 1,700 launches), but the majority of those out of Russia's Northern Cosmodrome. The halfway decent condition of the booster in this photo makes you wonder if the Korolev bureau ever tried, at least experimentally, to recover and reuse these things. - Ed Kyle |

I was somewhat surprised to see the photo of the one with the motors still on it- although most of the motor was fairly cheap metal, the turbopumps and plumbing should have had some alloys in them that would have scrap metal value. Does anyone know what the catalyst is for the hydrogen peroxide generator that drives the turbopumps? Sometimes silver is used, and that would be certainly worth recovering. Pat |

Good thought -- and I've been told that teams in fact do retrieve turbopump packages and other black boxes, for refurbishment and reflight in new vehicles. |
