It releases the nozzle extension from the end of the booster. The rational is, impacting the water with the large nozzle extension would place excessive stress on the rest of the booster. So that part is expendable unless it somehow floats. I suspect the cost of the expendable portion is less then the cost of the potential damage caused by leaving it in place... |
