I learned of this upcoming transit in a 19th century astronomy book

if I'm the one who learned it from the oldest source.

Sounds like an interesting book, what is the title and who is the
author?

Manual of Astronomy, a Text-Book by Charles A. Young, Ph.D., LL.D.
Published by Ginn and Company, 1902.

Ok, that's not quite the 19th century, though it is more than a
hundred years ago. However, the text is clearly older, as it mentions
"the present century" meaning the 19th, and refers to events in the
1890s in the future tense.

I found a biography of the author online. He was a "professor of
Mathematics, Natural Philosophy and Astronomy" from 1856 until his
death in 1908.
