Headquarters, Washington Dec. 2, 2004 (Phone: 202/358-1726/1712) MEDIA ADVISORY: M04-194 APPALACHIAN STUDENTS CALL SPACE STATION CREW Students in rural Appalachia will experience the excitement of space flight next week when they make an out- of-this-world phone call to the International Space Station crew. Expedition 10 Commander Leroy Chiao and Flight Engineer Salizhan Sharipov arrived on the Earth-orbiting outpost in October. The event, including a video link with the crew, is Tuesday from 11:30 to 11:50 a.m. EST. More than 450 students from Phelps Junior and Senior High Schools, Phelps, Ky., will chat with the crew and learn about the vital role the Station plays in the Vision for Space Exploration. They will also discuss weather research conducted on board. The entire Phelps community of over 10,000 will be able to view the call live through a partnership with a local television station. This activity supports NASA's efforts to encourage students to study and possibly pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The video calls enhance education opportunities that use the unique environment of human space flight. They are an integral part of NASA's Teaching from Space Program, which builds partnerships with the education community. The downlink airs live on the Web and on NASA TV, available in the continental U.S. on AMC-6, Transponder 9C, C-Band, at 72 degrees west longitude. The frequency is 3880.0 MHz. Polarization is vertical, and audio is monaural at 6.80 MHz. In Alaska and Hawaii, NASA TV is available on AMC-7, Transponder 18C, C-Band, at 137 degrees west longitude. The frequency is 4060.0 MHz. Polarization is vertical, and audio is monaural at 6.80 MHz.
