Both the book and the movie preceded (1951) the problems with the Comet (1954). But metal fatigue was actually discovered in 1837, the name having been coined in 1854. But while metal fatigue was known, it was still not fully understood - and it was not anticipated that simply having windows with square corners in the Comet would cause cracks to develop at their corners under the stress of repeated pressurization cycles.
