Of course yes
According this book, the S1C T, named "T bird" was fired on MSFC stand in 1965 and on MTF stand on 1967. But this stage was shown on pictures at Marshall MIX without engines. How is possible ? Is it the only "stage test" fired on stand before the first flight stage ? All stages are test fired. I don't know the specific pictures, but it is possible that the engines, or more likely the engine bells, were removed for transport. IIRC from Spacecraft Films Apollo 11 DVD, the S1C engine bells were remounted in the VAB prior to stage erection and stacking. |

Thank you, exactly, in the MIX, the caption said "engines are mounted after the stage hoisted". After this test firnig, the stages was shipped at MTF for test firnig in new stand B1, but I don t know if the 5 engines remaind in place on stage. This pic http://mix.msfc.nasa.gov/ABSTRACTS/MSFC-6634373.html show the S1C D hoisted on dynamic stand at Marshall in 1965. This pic http://mix.msfc.nasa.gov/ABSTRACTS/MSFC-6761031.html show a S1C hoisted on stand at MTF (Stennis center now). Look the F1 engines. Is it the S1C D or the S1C T with one engines ? -- Cordialement, Didier Capdevila Capcom Espace, le site de l' espace www.capcomespace.net |

But this stage was shown on pictures at Marshall MIX without engines. How is possible ? Is it the only "stage test" fired on stand before the first flight stage ? Here is the information I have on the four Saturn V test stages that were built. Marshall also built stage mockups. S-1-T was the only test stage used for static test firings. All of the Saturn V flight stages were also run through full-up acceptance test firings. The photo you refer to might show one of the other test stages. S-1C Test Stages: S-1C-T: "All systems" test stage, known as "T-Bird". Built by MSFC. First S-1C assembled. Construction began 1963. Completed early 1965. Equipped with 5 F-1 engines. Used in static propulsion tests at MSFC. Erected in S-1C test stand March 1, 1965. First fired April 15, 1965. First full duration test August 15, 1965. Fifteeen tests altogether. Moved to MTF to test new S-1C test stand October 1965. First test on 3-3-1967. Returned to MSFC March 1967. Additional static tests at MSFC through at least August 1967. Stage accumulated a grand total of at least 22 test firings. [Now displayed at KSC Saturn 5 Center, in a modified paint scheme meant to mimic S-1C-6]. S-1C-S: Structural test stage without engines. Second S-1C built by MSFC. Built 1963-1965. Used for structural load testing at MSFC in 1965. [Scrapped]. S-1C-F: Facilities test stage with real center engine and four simulated outer engines. Third S-1C built by MSFC 1963-1965. Shipped to KSC from MAF January 1966 for facility testing as part of SA-500-F vehicle. Rolled out to LC39A on 5-25-1966. Returned to MSFC and stored on lot. [Scrapped]. S-1C-D: Dynamic test stage with real center engine and four simulated outer engines. First S-1C built by Boeing at Michoud 1964-1965. Shipped to MSFC in October 1965 for dynamic testing as part of full three-stage SA-500-D vehicle. Erected in Dynamic Test Stand January 31, 1966. Tested with spacer S-2 and S-IVB-D during 1966. Tested with S-2-F/D and full Saturn 5 for 10 weeks during spring of 1967. [Now displayed at U.S. Space & Rocket Center (USSRC) in Huntsville]. - Ed Kyle |

The caption of that picture says that the thing on the corner that *looks* like an F-1 engine is a dummy... The photograph shows the 300,000 pound S-IC stage being lifted from its transporter into place inside the 360-foot tall test stand. This dynamic test booster has one dummy F-1 engine and weight simulators are used at the other four engine positions. -- Reed |

Are you sure ?, On MIX , it is show with the real engines on corner, not on the center http://mix.msfc.nasa.gov/ABSTRACTS/MSFC-6634373.html I stand corrected. "Stages to Saturn" says it had one real F-1 and four F-1 mass simulators, but does not specify their positions. I wonder if the real F-1 might not have been rotated into other positions during the dynamic test series. Looks like it was S-IC-D. Sat Illustrated Chronology shows that, after finishing dynamic testing at MSFC, S-IC-D was shipped to MTF where it arrived on April 23, 1967. It was "placed into storage pending its use in the early fall". The photo seems to show it being hoisted into the B1 test stand to "prove the operational readiness of the stand". According to "Wernher von Braun, Crusader for Space" by Stuhlinger and Ordway, von Braun had MSFC requisition this stage in 1968 (via a request to Kennedy Space Center, but I'm not sure if this means the stage had found its way to KSC) for use in "Ground Transportation Tests". The "tests" turned out to be the transportation of the stage to the new U.S. Space and Rocket Center for display. It's still there. - Ed Kyle |
