Hi all,
Anyone come across tube rings for a 5" (125mm) tube anywhere? Cheers Ian. |

There is a big difference, as the Synta 5"/127mm mak has a 144mm diameter tube. Rings are available for common scopes by name, but it's safest to measure the outside diameter of your tube carefully and supply that dimension as well as your scope type when enquiring about suitable rings. Telescope Service in Germany have a selection of rings: http://www.teleskop-service.de/Selbs...hrschellen.htm I've bought a number of items from them in the last several years, and they are competent and helpful (and can handle email in English). Best Regards, John. P.S. The difference between 5" and 125mm is 2mm, which is a significant error for sizing a tube ring. Hi John, This is for a real telescope ;-) Ian physically has the tube and will no doubt supply the sizes in due course. -- Pete http://www.digitalsky.org.uk Recent images http://www.digitalsky.org.uk/recent/recent_images.html ** Last update June 24 2005 ** |

The tube diameter is spot on 5" as accurately as I can measure. Something
slightly bigger could be OK as I could pad out with felt or similar. Cheers Ian. "John Shakespeare" wrote in message ... Hi Ian,

Exactly 5" does not seem to be a common tube diameter. Padding to the next size up (136mm or 139mm) is possible, but might be tricky to do uniformly. There are some rings which supposedly adjust to a range of diameters, but I've no idea how good they are. The link I gave earlier (below) has some. Best Regards, John. Thanks John,
This is a very old telescope - Patrick Moore's 5" Cooke Refractor. Cheers Ian. "John Shakespeare" wrote in message ... Hi Ian,
Ian Sharp wrote: Thanks John, This is a very old telescope - Patrick Moore's 5" Cooke Refractor. Cheers Ian. Perhaps such a special scope deserves bespoke rings, rather than a nip & tuck job or one-size-fits-all treatment. Best Regards, John. "John Shakespeare" wrote in message ... Hi John,
Yes, I'm looking into this with a local metal-working company. I suspect it will be the route I will take. Cheers Ian. |
