I'm thinking of the tilting of Mars spin axis. Like earth it has
alternating summer and winter in each hemisphere. Mars has global warming and cooling from its distance from the sun. lets suppose that the north pole is tilted directly at the sun at the time of perihelion passage. This has to give a more intense solar heating.(warm summer temperatures) Not all that bad for south pole because the planet is close to the Sun. The opposite would of course be true when Mars is at aphelion. Now we know that all planets spin axis changes slowly with time. Like my gyroscope spinning on my desk in earth's gravity, the spin axis of a planet describes a circle on the heavens, centered on the pole of the planet's orbit.(read that) What it comes down to is this. The motion, characteristics of a spinning body(this case planet) that feel external forces is called "precession" The Sun's gravity is the influence in this case. Mars spin axis precesses slowly around the pole of its orbit once in every 50,000 years All this has to be taken in,for it changes Mars temperature, It is theorized that Mars tilt can be on occasion as much as 45 degrees. That means at an axil tilt of 45 degrees the average annual temp. at the poles is essentially the same as at the equator. Here is an interesting thought . This would be true for the earth, for its tilt would get just as bad as Mars, and we would have great climate swings. Our moon keeps its tilt axis from going to extremes. The moon makes life on the Earth much more habitable, and it can be very sexy as well. Bert PS the greatest axis tilt the Earth can have ranges from 22.5 to 24.5(not bad at all) |
