The right-wing extremists who hold power in this country have pushed me so far to the left that I'm beginning to wonder if maybe Trotsky and Lenin, both of whom I have long admired, might have, in fact, been Reagan Republicans. Well, I guess that leaves it pretty clear where you are coming from. I'm surprised you could consider supporting Gore or Kerry. They are pretty middle of the road, really. I suspect Kerry would do little to change what Bush has done -- he just would not be as up-front and abrasive in doing it (e.g., another Clinton). Given your characterizaton above, the only main-stream American politician of the past century I could see aligned even remotely with your ideas is Henry Wallace -- and that would be quite a stretch. Phil Actually, if he wants to align himself with a current "functioning" government of his ilk, he (Davoud) needs to take a trip south to Florida and keep going until he hits the water line. At that point, jump in a boat and set a course to the southwest. When he gets to the first beach (the one with a bearded old man in a military uniform holding an AK47), he has found his new home. He may already be there. From above he said: I'm a citizen of the great country that _invented_ the concept of revolution by the radical left. That cannot be the US .. since it is hard to consider Washington, Jefferson, et al -- many of whom were slave-owning landed aristrocacy -- as "the radical left". Nor would Danton, Murat and Robespierre qualify. So maybe Davoud *is* refering to such as Fidel and Che and lives in Cuba. Phil |

I'm a citizen of the great country that _invented_ the concept of revolution by the radical left. Phil Wheeler: That cannot be the US .. since it is hard to consider Washington, Jefferson, et al -- many of whom were slave-owning landed aristrocacy -- as "the radical left". It wasn't hard for George III to consider these folks to be radical. And you haven't considered Thoreau (_On Civil Disobedience_) or the writings of Thomas Paine. These were dangerous leftists who advocated the overthrow of the established system -- the same kind of system the extreme right is trying -- and failing -- to restore. Davoud:
No need for sadness! If the folks here are typical of the U.S. population, a majority of those who voted chose Al Gore. Jon Kickerston: Um, excuse me, but not sure how you can make that conclusion. I was alluding to the fact that Mr. Gore received 543,895 more votes than Mr. Bush -- and that's not counting the Supreme Court ruling that there was insufficient time to find out how many votes Mr. Gore received in Florida. http://www.fec.gov/pubrec/2000presgeresults.htm All the FL elections proved was how evenly divided the country really is. Wrong tense. The country may have been evenly divided in 2000, but it isn't now! Bush and his puppetmasters will be sent packing by a comfortable margin. Davoud -- usenet *at* davidillig dawt com |

[snip] John Kerry has just earned the endorsement of *48 Nobel Prize-winning scientists*. This proves that scientists know much about science and absolutely _nothing_ about politics. Hmmm; if what you say is true, Al, what does that say about what politicians know about science? I, for one, am one scientist who knows enough about politics to know that my current favorite presidential candidate is "None of the Above". If we had started drilling in ANWR four years ago, we would be thumbing our noses at the Saudis today...and the price of gas would still be under a dollar. We can, of course, "thumb our noses at the Saudis" anytime we wish; it would be kinda dumb (and not very grateful), but feel free. [If someone really wishes to thumb a nose at OPEC, may I suggest a better place to start would be by conserving energy? Better insulate our homes and offices, drive more economically, consider alternative fuels, etc. The US, with 5% of the world's population, uses 25% of the world's energy.] ANWR at full production has a capacity of 2% of total US oil consumption. It would have some moderating effect on gas prices, but not what you envision. (And ANWR stands for, what again? Arctic National WILDLIFE REFUGE? Uh, OK.) Given all that has been discussed about drilling at ANWR, I have NOT heard what I feel is the most logical answer. LEAVE THE OIL THERE UNTIL WE REALLY NEED IT!! Compared to known proven reserves, there isn't an ocean of oil at ANWR. Also, given the difficulites of extracting from this field, it isn't cheap oil, either. So, leave it there until everyone else has used their supply. Then ANWR will really be worth something! ¤ Clear skies & a star to steer by!
