Last Sunday I saw a television preacher talking about how just until
recently astronomers believed that there were only about 10 billion galaxies total. He then said that the Hubble Space "Equipment" had recently revealed that there were actually more like 50 billion galaxies. Somebody tell me if I'm wrong, but I seem to remember that figure being upwards of 100 billion galaxies when I was in grade school (early sixties). The preacher was Jack Van Impe, and he was talking about how great the Glory of God must be for there to be so many galaxies. Looks like he's short-changed God's Glory by at least 50 billion galaxies. Seems like quite a bit to me. Reckon these guys ever have a clue when they talk about science? |

Counting the number of galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field
multiplied by the angular extent of the sky estimates about 100 billion galaxies within our observable horizon. Here is a better source of information that is typically found on TV. Ned Wright's Cosmology Tutorial http://www.astro.ucla.edu/~wright/cosmolog.htm http://www.astro.ucla.edu/~wright/cosmology_faq.html WMAP: Foundations of the Big Bang theory http://map.gsfc.nasa.gov/m_uni.html WMAP: Tests of Big Bang Cosmology http://map.gsfc.nasa.gov/m_uni/uni_101bbtest.html -Sam Wormley http://edu-observatory.org/eo/galaxies.html |

Do not watch Jack van Impe unless you are wearing an aluminum foil hat. Better yet, wrap your whole body in aluminum foil to ward off the rays this dingbat emits. Jack van Impe lines up the biblical book of Daniel, the biblical book of The Revelation, and several recent issues of the Jerusalem Times side-by-side then he proceeds to cite "parallels" between the texts to tell us that the end is near. He has predicted the second coming of christ to occur somewhere around 2012. One of the signs he is looking at is the number of UFO sightings over Jerusalem -- because UFOs are angels and when lots of UFOs/angels gather over Jerusalem, the end is here. I did not make this up. --- Joe S. |

I don't think I'd ask an astronomer for spiritual guidance. I wouldn't
depend on a minister for scientific information. (I wouldn't trust most televangelists for anything.) If you are interested in some good fiction about the relationship between science and religion, check out Dan Brown's "Angels and Demons". -- Ron Andrews http://members.hostedscripts.com/antispam.html "Doogie Hoosier" wrote in message m... And don't forget to note that the operative word here is "FICTION."
