Hmm. And this was reported on Reuters. But, as we all know, flying
saucers are illusions caused by temperature inversions, not alien or
interdimensional craft with the ability to jam missiles.

How do we reconcile this apparent contradiction?

Ah. These six former USAF officers and one former enlisted man are
real people, but they're also... mistaken... at the least. Perhaps the
stress of their work got to them, perhaps they think that they'll fool
enough people with this baloney to bring about world peace, perhaps
the Reds have spiked their drinks and then brainwashed them into
remembering these imaginary incidents.

Now, maybe this is unfair, and flying saucers really are tampering
with our missiles. But I would hesitate to think just how much
evidence of that is going to be needed before sober and sensible
people are going to accept that as the most likely explanation.

Incidentally, the original post, instead of claiming that this news
item proves that UFOs are real, claims that this is a government hoax
intended to replace the War on Terror as an excuse for infringing our
civil liberties.

This is also nonsense. The government knows full well that not enough
people are dumb enough to believe in flying saucers for that to work.
Hollywood does a good enough job making Americans laugh that there is
no need for a secret government conspiracy aimed at the same goal.

However, I suppose it could be a secret conspiracy to switch the
people dumb enough to vote for Sarah Palin over to flaky New-Age
Democratic candidates. Or it could be something even more complicated
and sinister, which will work in the opposite direction to that which
I expect. Maybe the FBI should be investigating Christine O'Donnell?

Several people say things happened, but hundreds of thousands have
served in ICBM units without reporting any such thing, and no official
documents have leaked. UFO sightings? Sure, they've happened in
missile fields (they are mainly of the nocturnal lights type). Taking
control? I'm not at all convinced. In the first place, I don't think
it's physically possible. Even advanced aliens have the same laws of
physics governing propagation of radio signals, etc. The capsules were
extensively grounded and hardened to avoid any type of interference
(MIJI) or (much more powerful) EMP. If it somehow happened anyway,
the investigations would have been immediate and extensive, and they
would have been followed by emergency control system modifications to
increase resistance to interference. These actions couldn't have been
kept to a small circle (the brass would have tried to do that, but it
wouldn't have worked).
