Dear fellow amateur astronomers here at Sci.astro.amateur,

I've gotten fed up to the teeth with those (no names please as we all
know the culprits) who really seem to get their jollies at disrupting a
perfectly good discussion of amateur astronomy. So, I've decided to
create a Google Group named real.amateurastronomy.

Real.amateurastronomy is a group for amateur astronomers to talk about
observational astronomy to techniques to hardware. Folks who wish to
disrupt the group by posting patently bogus material ( and we all know
what I mean ) are not allowed and will not be tolerated.

So let's have fun talking about our beloved hobby without the flack
etc

You are aware, aren't you, that there are already many very successful
and happy Yahoogroups dedicated to amateur astronomy? Why is yours a
better alternative?

Well Mr. Crinklaw, I'm offering an alternative to the nonsense that we
have to deal with Min and all the rest. Of course, anyone could do
the same, funny thing is that no one really wants to deal with it.

Yup--another troll--just as I thought.

Patrick,

Perhaps dealing with the lunatic fringe is easier than yet another
moderated group. And there is a potential for misuse of the moderation.
One example is where certain topics are deemed to be *Off-Topic* while
the consumption of alcoholic beverages seems to be allowed ... very
confusing. Here on s.a.a. it is a free for all, but it's easy enough to
ignore the posts and topics that are obvious trolls. As well as posts by
people hiding behind a "handle"...... This makes it bearable.

Regards

Bill

I long ago thought about hosting a general amateur-astronomy forum
without Min and his ilk, but I rather thought that I would come under
the same criticism you are receiving, and decided it wasn't worth it.

Furthermore, if you study the archives (you needn't go back very far)
you will find that many of the genuine amateur astronomers who frequent
SAA seem to enjoy sparring with the psychopaths. Some of them are drawn
to nutso posts like moths to a flame, just so they can tsk tsk over
them or present yet another condescending and pedantic exposition on
the True Nature of the Universe. Go figure.

As for Yahoo groups, in general I like them, but on some of them I
either won't post a question or I will do an extensive search before
posting a question because I often get replies from the same pedagogues
who would have replied if i had posted the question in SAA, while I am
looking for a /wider/ /variety/ of viewpoints.

If your heart is pure and your intent honorable, I wish you luck with
your forum, but I don't hold much hope for success for an astronomy
forum that excludes Mij and Min.

Davoud,
You seem a good soul. It is taking me much time to filter out the good folks
from what I consider the bad. I like you the way you addressed the issue to
Patrick. I was surprised to see him called a troll for his suggestion
however.

Thanks,
Jeffrey
