Former astronaut, senator Glenn hurt in car crash
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060805/pl_nm/glenn_dc_2 Reuters Former astronaut and senator John Glenn and his wife are in fair condition in a Columbus, Ohio, hospital after being injured in a car accident, a hospital official said on Saturday. Glenn, 85, and his wife, Anna, will be released later on Saturday, said Louis Tejada, a nurse administrator at Grant Medical Center in Columbus. "He's in fair condition," Tejada said. The Glenns were admitted late on Friday night after the crash. Columbus police could not be reached for comment, but the Columbus Dispatch newspaper reported that Glenn's car collided with another Friday night on the northeast side of Columbus. Glenn was the first U.S. astronaut to orbit Earth. He was elected U.S. senator for Ohio in 1974 and retired in 1999. Former Astronaut Glenn in Car Accident http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?i...C-RSSFeeds0312 Former Senator, Astronaut John Glenn Suffers Minor Injuries in Car Accident COLUMBUS, Ohio Aug 5, 2006 (AP)- Former senator and astronaut John Glenn and his wife were taken to a hospital with minor injures after being involved in a car accident, police said. Glenn, 85, and his wife, Annie, 86, were in fair condition early Saturday morning at Grant Medical Center, a nursing supervisor said. The driver of the other car, Amy Myers of suburban New Albany, said she was driving east late Friday night when Glenn, who was headed west, tried to turn left onto a highway ramp. Myers, who was not injured, said her car hit the front of his. Glenn was "very sincerely sorry," Myers said. Glenn, who served in the Senate from 1974 to 1998, first made headlines in 1962, when he piloted the first manned orbital mission of the United States. He went back into space in 1998, at the age of 77. |

Send him back into space where he is safe. Rusty |

It shows Glenn's automobile on a tow truck and Glenn strapped down and being wheeled on a stretcher. http://www.10tv.com/?sec=home&story=...300117955.html Here is the news story from the TV 10 news webpage: "Former Ohio Senator and astronaut John Glenn was involved in a car accident late Friday night, on Columbus's north side. The accident happened on Morse Road near I-270. Police say Glenn turned in front of a woman while trying to enter 270 southbound. Glenn was taken to Grant Medical Center on a stretcher after complaining of some pain. Police say the airbag in Glenn's car deployed, hitting him in the chest. His injuries, however, were minor. Glenn's wife was also in the car. Police say she is fine, as is the other driver involved." Rusty |

The pacecar driver was a big shot car dealer in Indianapolis, not a professional driver, who simply wasn't up to the job. He veered hard into the press stand apparently after getting distracted by something. |

He veered hard into the press stand apparently after getting distracted by something. The traditional story told around these parts, (Indianapolis: Speed Capitol of the World) is that the pacecar driver was under the (false) impression that he was supposed to stay ahead of the pack until reaching the start line. He thereby delayed is braking until way too late, and the rest is way off topic. Steve Vernon ps Said big shot car dealer was a Sperry ball-turret gunner during the War.... ![]() |

People break real easy when they are 85. |
