Falsifying Plate Tectonics.
Watch this space.
Strike 1. (coming up) No mechanism.

I know properly this should belong in sci.geo.geology, but the best
they can do over there is show each other pebbles they collected at the
weekend, ..and swap stories about walks and pictures they took, so I'm
looking to broaden the reach. Bob Grumbine says there are people in
talk.o who know some geology, and I think the point should be of
interest to physics since if Plate Tectonics doesn't work, then what
does?

Repeat:- This thread is about how to falsify Plate Tectonics: No
sidetracks please.

Science is about proving testable ideas and concepts.

Why don't you buy a book or two, do some reading and actually try
working stuff out for yourself. I already recommended you a book, by a
first year UG Earth Scientist who understands the process.

You've been thoroughly spnaked by geologists and physicists alike.
Perhaps try another science - chemistry?

Just like the cranky anti-relativists, who equate a lack of
understanding with the idea that GR and SR is wrong.

I surmise that what you are trying falls under Relf's law:
"Bull**** repeated to the limit of infinity asymptotically approaches
the odour of roses."

With the corollary.

"The approach to infinity can be binomially approximated by a time
inversely proportional to the depth of knowledge of the subject matter
the repeater has."

The greatest enemy of science is pseudoscience.

Jaffa cakes. Sweet delicious orangey jaffa goodness, and an abject lesson why
parroting information from the web will not teach you cosmology.

Official emperor of sci.physics. Please pay no attention to my butt poking
forward, it is expanding.

Relf's Law?
"Bull**** repeated to the limit of infinity asymptotically approaches
the odour of roses."

Why are you posting this to talk.origins? Wouldn't alt.usenet-kook be a
better choice?

Like most kooks, he is incapable of understanding the differences
between geology, physics, chemistry, biology, and pastry baking.

If Plate Tectonics were false, then you would not get
- earthquakes and volcanoes concentrated in fairly distinct lines all
around the planet
- evidence of large-scale strike-slip faults, normal faults, subduction
faults, and spreading centers.
- continents whose outlines line up remarkably well
- older geologic features spread across distant continents
- marine fossils atop high mountains
- volcanic mountain chains like Hawaii and the Aleutians
- deep ocean trenches
- symmetrical records of magnetic pole reversals in rocks on opposite
sides of mid-oceanic ridges
- magnetic fields in igneous or metamorphic rocks that don't line up
with the present-day field or those of other rocks that solidified at
the same time on other continents.
- mountain ranges (Lunar surface features are the result of meteorite
impacts. There are no long folded mountain ranges as on Earth.)
- continent tracks across ocean floors

If you want to falsify plate tectonics, then you have to come up with a
theory that explains all these things better.

This list was not very hard for me to come up with, an I'm not a
specialist in the field[1]. Don findlay, if you've studied geology and
you think that the evidence doesn't support plate tectonics, then you
should be able to come up with an alternative. But let me warn you: If
you claim that there's a vast conspiracy of university geology
professors to brainwash young minds into thinking that it's all about
plate tectonics and that you, since you have *not* studied geology, know
more about it than others, then I'll laugh at you and think you don't
know what you're talking about.

[1] Okay. I'll own up to having a father whose name appeared in the
bibliography for "The Making of a Continent." Twice. But Geology 101
"Rocks for Jocks" was as far as I got with geology in college. If that's
enough to brainwash me, then the CIA is working with the wrong
techniques.

So what's your point? Pastry baking includes all of the preceding! (Yes!
Pastries exhibit all the classic features of geology: stratification,
metamorphosis under heat, things embedded in a matrix, mass
concentrations [chocolate croissants, yum!] ...)

You are an evil by Wegenerist has embraced Wegenerism and therefore you

Does the puppy blood come with a twist of lemon? We Wergnerians like lemon

Neaah, the sour humors of the lemon juice interact negatively with the
Prime_Humor (blood), leading to cwagulation.

Subduction is obviously some kind of governmental_malfeasance. I can
tell by the sound of the word that it's evil.

You know I've been pondering this for a while and I think that's how
this hillbilly got into the military!
