Trolls from SAA.

Alright. I'll give it The Senator's Try. No wait, I mean I promise not
to feed the trolls. :-)
Does Rich count? He's not always a troll.

That's a tough call, but you've called it right. Rich is not ALWAYS a
troll. And lately, he's been a little more on -topic than he often has in
the recent past.

He's spent a lot of time in my killfile, but he's also a well-seasoned
amateur astronomer, who has a LOT of experience he can share, when he's in
the mood to do so.

I always TRY to give Rich a little space, because I KNOW what he CAN do as a
contributor here. But that has often been tempered by the negative side of
his *other* posts...

The problem often has been what he IS doing at any given moment. Right now,
his pluses exceed his minuses. Who KNOWS what tomorrow may bring.

You've got to be kidding. That didn't remove any trolls from the
system. On the other hand, Del "Laserpointer" Johnson is gone. Maybe
you've got something there.

It didn't REMOVE the trolls, but it shortened their threads
considerably, and the signal to noise ratio got better. A few might
just go away if ignored.

I don't know what planet you came from, but this group has more trolls
on it today than ever before. Check out oriel's response on this
thread. It has never been as bad. And the local yocals still respond to
the trolls, over and over again. Did you see Davoud's troll bait on
Windows vs. Mac? The people who have left are the ones who contributed
the most. They all got tired and went to the private groups on Yahoo or
CloudyNights. This was a much better place in the mid to late 90's.
Oriel is right. The Pledge is just a group hug, a big circle jerk.

So if everyone ignored oriel, Davoud and the rest when they
troll?

We lost a lot of good contributors. But if we reduce the s/n
ratio we may not lose any more. We might even get some back.
But if we keep up long responses to trolls...

To Coppy

Did you ever stop to think that astronomy has to be an evolving
discipline otherwise it stagnates into an exercise in congratulating
each other on pretty pictures. The invention of the telescope was a
marvelous addition to astronomy is making celestial objects appear
bigger or more defined but it is limiting intellectually and
intutively.

The greatest astronomical tool to appear for centuries is the internet
and using time lapse footage taken by observational astronomers, the
astronomical insights of Copernicus and Kepler really blossom.

If I am the obstacle to appreceating these great astronomers than
ignore me but for goodness sake ,retaining those 17th century errors
which destroy the original Copernican/Keplerian reasoning for the
convenience of the clockwork Ra/Dec system is hardly the efforts of a
productive astronomer.

I came here in an effort to wake observational astronomers to the
intellectual and intutive satisfaction of Copernican heliocentricity
and its later refinements rather than give into the temptation of
theoretical guesswork.I may have failed but then again it is a shared
heritage rather than just an individual endeavor and I have never
promoted it as anything other than a shared heritage.

Default The Pledge

If you were real astronomers you would have little time for group hugs
and pledges.

The pledge of an observational astronomer is to correctly plot the
positions of planets using the stellar background as a reference but
not to include the stellar background when drawing conclusions -

http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ima...loop_tezel.jpg

The pledge of a real heliocentric astronomer is to actively present the
actual motions of the forward moving Jupiter overtaking the slower
forward moving Saturn -

http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ima...loop_tezel.jpg

To account for the other feature is to present the faster moving Earth
overtaking both those outer planets. Then and only then can you ever
dare to breathe the words 'astronomer and astronomy'.

You can remain 2 dimensional quasi- geocentrists if you adhere to this
putrid mutation of the Copernican insight -

"For to the earth planetary motions appear sometimes direct, sometimes
stationary, nay, and sometimes retrograde. But from the sun they are
always seen direct,"

NEWTON

So,pledge to your heart's content but you are no astronomers until that
awful 17th century misjudgement/misconduct is corrected.
