Default Turkish eclipse

Hi all,

So - I've got my flight booked and a hotel in Side, Turkey ready for
the eclipse. Is anyone else here going along?

Side is supposed to be almost right on the centre line of the eclipse.
I'd be interested in any opinions of where exactly to go for the event.
I imagine there'll be quite a few other astronomy geeks around this
area. Is there a public event organised for the day? I haven't yet
found anything on the web.

cheers

Jeremy

I'll be flying into Side on the 28th March.
Don't know the area, but does it really matter where you are, as long as
you're in the line of totality :-)

Although if there's a meet happening then I'd be interested in joining.

The Eclipse being, AIUI, on March 29th; partial in the UK from 10:45 to
12:20 BST. The Moon will, of course, be changing from Old to New.

According to "February Night Sky" in my Monday newspaper, however, the
Moon will be new on the 29th of *this* month. "Times" readers will,
however, "see" it on the 28th.

No wonder more people are turning to my Nightscenes 2006 book instead of
the Times version then as New Moon occurs on February 28th at 00:31UT
:-)

Now you are being unfair to The Times. They had it correctly (Mon Jan
30, p.54, "The night sky in February") as 28d 01h [Michael J Hendrie
gives it to the nearest hour, and uses GMT]. I don't take The Times,
but I do get given that page most months.

As you did not recognise that "February Night Sky" does not imply "The
Times", I can only conclude that you don't read a good newspaper -
you're probably too busy writing books.

Otherwise, it seems that a February new moon can occur on the 29th only
if the year is bissextile.

How about FAQ C.5 : "What astronomy books are written by readers of
u.s.a.?"

According to my my sun & moon web page
http://www.aphayes.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/sun_moon.html?Place='Cheltenham'&Lat=51.88&Long=-2.12&TZ=+1&TZname='BST'
for Cheltenham in UK new moon is 28:02:2006 at 00:29. As I've had
correspondence with religous groups who use the moon as a

calendar I doubt if they would visually observe the first fraction of
the iluminated moon for some time

after that depending on the local light pollution and horizon.
