Dear Friends,
We were privy to GREAT weather in Greece for today's solar eclipse. For a couple of sequences, please see http://www.perseus.gr/Astro-Eclipses-2005-10-03.htm and/or http://www.perseus.gr/Astro-Eclipses-2005-10-03b.htm . A Canon EOS 300d was used at the prime focus of an AP160/f7.5 with exposures every five minutes. Every third such exposure was ultimately used for the construction of the sequences depicted in the above links. Next year's solar eclipse includes totality through Greece and, more specifically, through the Isle of Kastelorizo. What a preview we had today in anticipation of next year's (local) totality! Clear skies. Anthony. |

But the world is no more the same...even the Norvegians (read: Carsten...) were successful in seeing the eclipse...I've been flooded with rain outside and by my kitchen sink inside....:-( Next year's solar eclipse includes totality through Greece and, more specifically, through the Isle of Kastelorizo. Hi Anthony
very nice sequence you got there. We at Thessaloniki had a great time watching and showing the eclipse to students at the Aristotle's University campus. Visit www.ofa.gr for photos Andreas Vossinakis (we met at the 4th conference in Athens and had a little chat about ISS transit. We did see it but unfortunately we were imaging a different quarter and eventually we missed it. Better luck next time) Andreas Vossinakis |

If you take the boat from Kastelorizo over to Turkey (it's very close), and then travel as close to the central line as you can get there, you'll get another 45 seconds (i.e. 3m 45s) of totality ! Home, Sweet Home!!! ;-) Anthony. |

Home, Sweet Home!!! ;-) Anthony. But your home is Athens, not Kastelorizo! ;-) Actually, I was thinking a bit along those lines myself for the July 1990 eclipse, which was total shortly after sunrise in Finland but in Sweden it was only partial. However, on the Swedish island Gotland that eclipse ought to have been visible as a total eclipse of the *morning* *twilight* ! I ended up going to Finland to see it though, and there I was clouded out.... :-( Anyway, you'll have a nice annular eclipse in Athens in 2030, and a total eclipse, also in Athens, in 2088. The last one is a bit too far into the future I suppose - but don't forget to tell your kids and grandkids about it! -- ---------------------------------------------------------------- Paul Schlyter, Grev Turegatan 40, SE-114 38 Stockholm, SWEDEN e-mail: pausch at stockholm dot bostream dot se WWW: http://stjarnhimlen.se/ |
