Default diffraction grating suppliers

Hi,

Does anyone here know of a reasonably priced supplier of diffraction
gratings suitable for webcam spectroscopy?

I've found some suppliers of holographic diffraction gratings which are
very reasonably priced but are very dense, at ~700 lines/mm. It seems
that a practical size is around 100 lines/mm.

There are references online, including on the pages of posters here, of
a French company Jeulin supply such a cheap grating but their website is
in French (not that thats surprising but it means I cant understand it!).

Spectroscopy is something that I'm just starting to experiment with and
so dont want to spend too much on expensive gear. I'm currently trying
to get the 700 l/mm grating and a prism the right distance from the
webcam to get a spectrum (not the grating and the prism at the same time
of course - I've learnt that much!).

Cheers,
~Al

There was a thread in here on using ordinary CDs as diffraction gratings a
few weeks back. Apparently, they are quite good.

I saw this mentioned in Stephen Tonkins book also. Its fine for getting
a bright spectrum from the Sun or lamps, but to build a simple
spectomoter with it that could be attached to a modest scope seems less
practical than what could be achieved with a transmission grating.

Thanks for the pointer though, I missed that thread and will go back and
reread!

Astromedia used to do them, may still do. Come in 35mm slide mounts, but
are adaptable.

SCS Astro and various other places do the Rainbow Optics kit.

Best,
Stephen

Hi Albert,

Your query may be well timed! I am currently trying to get a UK manufacturer
interested in making a filter holder mounted grating similar to the Jeulin
100l/mm, which would be ideal for producing low resolution spectra with
webcams etc as it would be mounted on the nosepiece adapter and the spectrum
fits nicely on the chip. Hopefully it will be off the ground in a couple of
months and should cost around the same as say a decent LP or narrow band
filter.

You may have come across my site already. If not here it is ;-)

As you have already found out, if you are using a transmission grating, low
dispersion is needed for use with the small CCD chip a webcam has. I have
had some success with the Jeulin grating but it does need to be mounted
somehow and Jeulin have a minimum 300 Euro charge to the uk. (Last year I
coordinated a bulk purchase for QCUIAG members)

Don't remember if I've already given this URL:
http://www.webalice.it/paolagianluca...7/itpro7e.html

maybe 7500 lines/mm are too much for your aims.

Greenwell advertised gratings recently but I find that there website is
not running at the moment [ www.greenwell.co.uk]. You may know someone
who has their latest leaflet. I think they were offering 900 lines/mm
strips @£7-99.

You have got their name slightly wrong! It is actually:

URL:http://www.greenweld.co.uk/

The item is still advertised @ £7-99. Ref:OPF002

" Transmission diffraction grating (900 lines per mm) transparent film.
The high line density produces a wide coloured spectrum of the
observed or projected light source similar to a prism.
Make a hand spectroscope.

Size 15.2 x 3.8cm sufficient for four 35mm slideholders which can
easily be made from the cardboard box.
Larger size available on request."

The previous item is OPF001 which is linear polarising film. Comes
in 100mm x 50mm which will make two 50mm sq pieces

Type 'grating' into their Search box and the page that comes up has
a number of interesting optical 'supplies' on it.

Sorry! Thanks Graham. I did mistakenly type in Greenwell and got just a
title page for a site which appeared to be under construction; hence the
confusion.
