Default DST: Blame Ben

Love it, exempt from it, or hate it, here's a good site about Daylight Savings
Time:
http://webexhibits.org/daylightsaving/index.html

Including Ben Franklin's original essay from 1784...
http://webexhibits.org/daylightsaving/franklin3.html

And some interesting opposition...
....A writer in 1947 wrote, "I don't really care how time is reckoned so long as
there is some agreement about it, but I object to being told that I am saving
daylight when my reason tells me that I am doing nothing of the kind. I even
object to the implication that I am wasting something valuable if I stay in bed
after the sun has risen. As an admirer of moonlight I resent the bossy
insistence of those who want to reduce my time for enjoying it. At the back of
the Daylight Saving scheme I detect the bony, blue-fingered hand of Puritanism,
eager to push people into bed earlier, and get them up earlier, to make them
healthy, wealthy and wise in spite of themselves." (Robertson Davies, The Diary
of Samuel Marchbanks, 1947, XIX, Sunday.)

Personally, I'm glad to get back to Standard Time, and the longer stargazing
hours it heralds.
Happy Cross-Quarter (Halloween)!

Arizona doesn't play either. And Indiana has three different time arrangements
within the state:

The Navajo Reservation areas of northern Arizona follow DST (Mountain Daylight
Time) to be consistent with portions of the reservation outside state
boundaries. But some local state offices within the reservation boundaries stay
with Mountain Standard Time. When driving across the northwest part of the
state, it can be strange to watch the time reading on your cell phone change
back and forth as the ground rules used by different cells gets applied.

HST all year round? I guess the ground-based telescope operators on
Mauna Kea must find that hard to compete with. ;-)
