Ph.D. position (Galaxy Formation)

Following the award of a Marie Curie Excellence Grant, Leiden
Observatory invites applications for a 4-year Ph.D. position to work
on problems related to the chemical enrichment of the intergalactic
medium under the supervision of Dr. Joop Schaye.

The project will focus on statistical analyses of quasar absorption
spectra (taken with the VLT and Keck telescopes) and their
interpretation using computational and analytic models. The succesful
candidate will have the opportunity to work on both theoretical and
observational projects in collaboration with an international team of

Leiden Observatory is the oldest university astronomy department in
the world, and the largest astronomy department in the
Netherlands. Leiden is a charming university town with international

The position comes with a competitive salary and full benefits. The
starting date is negotiable, but should be no later than September
2005.

formed research group lead by Joop Schaye. He/she will have the
opportunity to work on both theoretical (particularly computational)
and data analysis projects and will in addition be encouraged to
