I took these images last night (7-15-2016) with a color digital camera thru a 10" F14.6 Maksutov-Cassegrain. The color saturation was set higher than normal on the Lunar craters, but these colors are for real.

Use to own a Russian 6" Mac-Cass, http://www.astromart.com/images/clas...9/701827-1.jpg very sharp scope and portable too! But the focuser mechanism was too complicated and got tighter with time, had to sell it! I heard the Mak-Newts are real planet killers! http://www.astromart.com/images/clas...9/701827-1.jpg |

Beautiful images! I especially like the colors in your moonscapes.

Not helped by the recently whitewashed building complex in the vast crater. Or is it a giant, alien footballer scoring a goal in the net? |

A good scope is a must, but location and seeing matter just as much. http://alpo-j.asahikawa-med.ac.jp/kk05/m051026z.htm |

Right now Mars is well past its close approach as can be seen by the gibbous appearance. It is also so low in the sky that it's like looking at the image at the bottom of a swimming pool. Best place to image the planets is in the tropics near the ocean where the laminar air flow allows the air to be very steady. I have used over 1000x in the Florida Keys, whereas here in the upper Midwest I would be lucky to see anything over 350x. In the video of Mars that I took last week, the planet wiggles and pulsates, bobs and dances like an amoeba. Nevertheless, by using a video stream and having software select the sharpest frames for stacking, the net result is a useable image. It's a process known as Lucky Imaging. The software that can do this is RegiStax or Autostackert, both of which are freeware developed by enthusiastic amateurs. |
