I have only seen one of these in a local pawn shop and it
had the meade tripod and just the controller without the display on it...does this scope usually come without the autostar controller? Is the tripod an option? Where can I find one online to answer these questions please? Thanks! |

Here is a link with specs http://www.technikcamera.com/ETX6070at.htm Almost looks like the tripod is an option. Seems the controller comes with it. |

does this scope usually come without the
autostar controller? Is the tripod an option? Hi: The scope comes with the (494) Autostar. The tripod is optional. I've got my 60 on an adapter plate I bought from Scopetronix that allows me to mount it on our heavy duty Manfrotto tripod. I'm not impressed by the tripod Meade sells for the 60. Disapointment
Hi Ga For novices, yes, probably...for old hands, this can be a surprisingly nice little scope. Think "half a pair of 60mm binocs on a goto mount." I've been enjoying this EXTREMELY silly little scope for several years now. I was amazed at the _sweet_ widefield views it produced at Prude last time I was at TSP. It's all I use as a travel scope now. Peace, Rod Mollise Author of _Choosing and Using a Schmidt Cassegrain Telescope_ Like SCTs and MCTs? Check-out sct-user, the mailing list for CAT fanciers! I've been enjoying this EXTREMELY silly little scope for several years now. I was amazed at the _sweet_ widefield views it produced at Prude last time I was at TSP. It's all I use as a travel scope now. I think the optics on the ETX-60's and 70s have been quite variable. I believe you have said that you could split the double-double with your ETX-60. My ETX-70 fit Gary's description, disappointing, splitting Castor was the best it could ever do. It did provide decent widefield views but my cheapie Clone ST-80 came along and was a significant step up optically. Given your preferences, I would think a C-5 on an alt-az mount with focal reducer would be your choice as a travel scope. Not quite the wide field views but still capable of 25X with a focal reducer, takes up less space too. jon |

Given your preferences, I would think a C-5 on an alt-az mount with focal
reducer would be your choice as a travel scope. Hi Jon: It probably would...the C5 is one of THE sweetest scopes made...except.... --The C5 and accessories start to take up quite a bit of space in the trunk. --To be honest, I don't worry about leaving the 60 sitting in a motel room. I _would_ worry a lot about leaving a C5 or NS5 by itself. The ETX 60 does quite well in regards to what we use a travel scope for--informal looks at the sky from the beach, etc. As far as optical quality...I am beginning to think that the 60s may have been somewhat better in general than the 70s.
