Does Leica Service Need Servicing

I recently sent my new condition Leica Zoom lens to Leica's service
center in New Jersey for a cleaning...my eyepiece came back with 1/2
inch scratch across the the focus ring, another scratch on the top
lens retaining ring and finally one nice big thumb print on the top
lens....Leica asked that I send it back to them BUT I was curious if
anyone else has had this sort of experience with Leica service...it
was a huge shock to me as I've always thought of them as a high end
optics and camera supplier and just assumed their service would be of
a similar high standard...it will certainly be interesting to see if
they take responsibility.

I've dealt with the Leica Service Center a few times, but always for
cameras. My experience with them has been pleasant, and I've never
had a problem. I once sent them my pride and joy (an M3 in mint
condition) for a CLA, and even warned them that I'd be hard to deal with
if it came back with a single scratch. It arrived back home just fine.

My guess is that Leica got sloppy here, which is unforgivable, but must
happen to every company on occasion. I'm betting that if you press them
firmly but in a gentlemanly manner, they'll replace your lens. I'd be
interested in the way they resolve this, so please keep us posted. Good

Be sure to "dust" the big thumb print and send a copy of it to the NCIC
(or FBI) to locate the perp of such a heinous crime. :-)
