Nope, it's a new one on me, but there are probably a ton of bad sci-fi films out there that I've never seen. Take a guess at what memories of this one led to: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046977/ 7:30am From The Earth To The Moon (1958) Lifelong rivals collaborate on a 19th-century moon rocket. Gotta love the "crusading scientist" types. ;-) The government isn't keen on his atomic rocket engine for the ship. Odd trivia fact: Chesley Bonestell did a different design for the "Luna" that didn't get used in the movie, but later got used in the movie "Flight To Mars": http://www.impawards.com/1951/flight_to_mars.html 3:00pm Mouse On The Moon, The (1963) A small European nation launches a space program using the local wine as rocket fuel. Cast: Margaret Rutherford, Ron Moody, Bernard Cribbins, David Kossoff Dir: Richard Lester C-85 mins, TV-G Hilarius! Nasty Great Tin Thing leaves Earth. Sounds awfully campy. Yeah, but they pull it off very well. Look for Ed Bishop as one of the astronauts on the US Moon lander. He would later be shown (briefly) as the captain of the Moon-bound Aries in "2001", and become head of SHADO in "UFO". 4:30pm Have Rocket, Will Travel (1959) Three janitors stumble onto the formula for rocket fuel. Would have been better if they had dressed as Nazi's. Three Stooges movies are always good for a few laughs, even the bad ones. Their Nazi impersonations were always fun. 6:00pm Moon Pilot (1962) An astronaut dodges secret agents and a beautiful spy before his first moon trip. Cast: Tom Tryon, Brian Keith, Edmond O'Brien, Dany Saval Dir: James Neilson C-98 mins I always wanted to see this, now's my chance. Can't go wrong with "beautiful spy" in the description. And a MONKEY in the movie, also! That's the sign of quality. 8:00pm Trip to the Moon, A (1902) In this silent film, a group of scientists ride to the moon in a cannon shell. Cast: Georges Melies, Henri Delannoy, Bleuette Bernon. Dir: Georges Melies Based on impact footage, Moon may be made of cream cheese. Fat-legged French dancing girls add to hilarity as they stomp around in really unsexy costumes. Yea, well, it was 1902... That's no excuse. Cast: Gregory Peck, Richard Crenna, David Janssen, James Franciscus Dir: John Sturges C-129 mins, TV-PG Kudos for building a full-scale lifting body type RV: http://www.cloudster.com/Sets&Vehicl...aroonedTop.htm (Is the red coloration supposed to be some sort of spray-on ablator, like used on the X-15?) Mariette Hartley is _hot_, even though see has only one navel in this outing. This one is cool, just for the models and special effects. Yeah, at the time they were considered quite well done, and the story line was fairly plausible also. 3:45am Capricorn One (1978) The government fakes a Mars landing then sets out to kill the astronauts involved. Cast: Elliott Gould, James Brolin, Brenda Vaccaro, Sam Waterson Dir: Peter Hyams C-123 mins, TV-14 Note that OJ Simpson isn't getting mentioned here. OJ really sucked as an actor. Which means that the first landing as a Main Bus B undervolt and other show stoppers even though they go on to a landing. I'll forgive them that. They'd just gotten access to a buttload of Apollo film negatives and put it all together on the big screen. So the "narrative", such as it was, was the timeline of a single mission, but stitched together from all the missions, narrated entirely by crewmembers, at a quality level higher than had been seen before by the public. I saw it at its debut, in the Galveston 1894 Grand Opera House, with a bunch of Apollo veterans including Gene Kranz and some of the astronauts in attendance. They all enjoyed it. That may have colored my opinion on the film, of course. 1:30am Marooned (1969) Three U.S. astronauts face a slow death when their rockets fail during a space voyage. Not sure how, but who knows? I can tell you where most of the budget went, and that's into the giant rotating glass tube gizmo. In this movie the Columbia is around the size of Skylab internally. Amazingly, "Those Fantastic Flying Fools" has a better representation of Verne's ship in it than this abomination, and it's a parody of the story. 9:30am First Men in the Moon (1964) A scientist's experimental space craft puts him in the path of an intergalactic invasion. I told ya! Those Nazi's are as indispensable to a Moon trip as a CPFM on a voyage to Mars. Ever see "Frau Im Mond"? That one has a Hitler Youth in it. They don't outright say he's a Hitler Youth...he's just a member of a "youth organization"...but you can see it in his eyes... Those cold, Aryan, eyes. As soon as he's back on Earth, he's going to turn in his report on what everyone did and said on the trip, get his "Informer Merit Badge", and become commandant of a youth concentration camp.
