Possible sign of an imminent supernova?
Yousuf Khan Betelgeuse Is Shrinking, Astrophysicists Report - The popular star is puzzling researchers - Softpedia "the star had registered a significant drop in size, comparable to the distance from where Venus orbits the Sun. Despite this fact, the variations recorded in its brightness levels were not very significant" http://news.softpedia.com/news/Betel...t-113760.shtml |

Possible sign of an imminent supernova? 15% shrinkage in 15 years, and accelerating. I want to know what the acceleration rate is. I am also concerned about possible EMP effects on Earth and on objects in orbit. |

Well, this list lists the 26 nearest stars to us, and Betelgeuse isn't on that list. The 26 Nearest Stars http://www.astro.wisc.edu/~dolan/con...a/nearest.html According to Wikipedia, it's only 600 ly's away. So it's certainly a candidate for the closest red supergiant. Betelgeuse - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betelgeuse Antares is also a red supergiant, and a similar distance away.
