Default How can a metal spring shrink to 26% on Mars?

How can a metal spring from Phoenix Mars Lander shrink to 26% in a
hole on Mars ?

NASA claimed a metal spring fell into a hole on Mars (Ref. 1). That
metal spring was 0.95 cm while on Phoenix deck (Fig. 1). However, the
“metal spring” shrank to 0.25 cm in a hole on Mars (Fig. 2). How come?
