Default S&T slimming down

I'm sure I'm not the only one who has noticed the substantial
reduction in number of pages per issue of Sky & Telescope; 102 vs 150
a year ago. Anyone heard why?

Sky Pub was bought out last year. You have to figure that any change is
going to be for the worse, with bean counters taking over. Stuart Goldman
or someone is going to come on here and deny it, probably, but buyouts
almost always result in cost-cutting and cheapening the product.

I believe this was discussed on Astromart recently.

This is hardly news. It's economics, as always.

The cover price of the magazine covers the cost of paper,
printing and distribution. Advertising pays for actually having
something to print on that paper. More ads = more material.
Less ads = less material.

Web content may affect this too: several magazines I
read have shifted particulary time-sensitive material from
the printed magazine to their web pages.

The size change was before the buyout, BTW. If you're
that concerned, why not ask S&T yourself? But check
your back issues: I think there may have been an editorial
about it, about the time of the last design/format change.

How about Stephen James O'Meara showing up at Astronomy recently?

Not really. S&T was purchased because it is a cash cow, and any buyer
would do nothing to change that. Any possible changes would occur in
staff rather than product. Also, this is the May issue, delivered in
March, and that is not the peak season for sales. Also, the telescope
business has slowed recently. Last, Meade has been involved in an
expensive lawsuit so it has cut back noticeably.

Actually, it's been tough for several years now. And it'll likely get
worse.

I haven't looked at S&T lately, but in the 90's the mag seemed to run
slightly over 100 pages, while 10 years later it was typically 150
pages or so. Has the amount of content been reduced recently or are
there fewer ads too?

That would qualify as "recently". Why do you think it will get worse?

Was it that expensive? Seems a lot of the claims have been dismissed
quickly.

Meade has known better days, that's sure
