Default Man's greatest achievement

When you ask people around the world what they think is man's greatest
achievement, many will answer the manned moon landings of the late '60's and
early '70's. It's unfortunate, therefore, that so many are denouncing the
Bush initiative to explore beyond Earth orbit.

What will man's greatest achievement be in 50 years? A manned Mars mission?

What will man's greatest achievement be in 50 years?

Conquering the process of mortality through genetic modification and/or body
cybernetics.

That won't bring immortality. The universe only has a few billion years
left, then we're all doomed. I think eventually we'll learn how to modify
the structure of space/time and change the laws of physics to suit our own
purposes. Stick around. The next few centuries are going to be interesting.

He means Immortality as in: Not getting old & croaking simply because time
passed by. No technology will make you immune to accidents or environment
failure. But stopping this slow rot that is considered "normal" ageing
would be a huge step towards immortality.

True AI.
A computer intelligence that actually *works*. One that is capable of
understanding, and hence improving itself.

Of course, this will be one of mankind's very last inventions, after that
our descendants will *be* that AI.

Computer speeds are doubling about every 14 months.
Human brain speeds are doubling about every 100 000 years.
You pick the inevitable winner.

Thank you for doing my explaining for me. Yes, no amount of body-cybernetics
will cancel accidental mortality. But I will still need it, in order to "stick
around for a few centuries."
