How far are SMC and 47 Tucanae from each other, in angular measure?
How well can you measure your position in the Galactic disc by the parallax between SMC and 47 Tucanae? If you are able to verify by SMC and 47 Tucanae that you are in general solar neighbourhood, what would be the next pointers to pick up? |

I'd say that it's the Small Magellanic Cloud. -- The Kedamono Dragon Pull Pinky's favorite words to email me. http://www.ahtg.net Have Mac, will Compute Check out the PowerPointers Shop at: http://www.cafeshops.com/PowerPointers ----== Posted via Newsfeeds.Com - Unlimited-Unrestricted-Secure Usenet News==---- http://www.newsfeeds.com The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! 120,000+ Newsgroups ----= East and West-Coast Server Farms - Total Privacy via Encryption =---- |

What's SMC? The Small Magellanic Cloud. It's at about 00h 53m RA, -72d 50m DEC. 47 Tucanae is at about 00h 24m RA, -72d 05m DEC. So roughly speaking, that's a difference of about half an hour in right ascension and one degree in declination, but at very high declination. Altogether that's a difference of two degrees or so. Their distances from us are quite different, however; 47 Tuc is only 13.4 kly away, but the Small Magellanic Cloud is 210.0 kly distant. -- Erik Max Francis && && http://www.alcyone.com/max/ San Jose, CA, USA && 37 20 N 121 53 W && AIM, Y!M erikmaxfrancis Every exit is an entry somewhere else. -- Tom Stoppard |
