It no more disproves it then when I hit the 8 ball with the cue ball and it goes flying off at an angle. Apparently so, but in reality, the new velocity is the vectorial resultant of both the craft's escape velocity and the planet's velocity. The reason why the planet does not actually slow down in reaction is that the minute amount of energy that it contributes to the craft is instantly replenished on account of it being in stable gravitational equilibrium on its orbit. (Remember that force is a function of the inverse square of the distance between the primary and the planet, and that the energy induced is directly related to the force at any given distance. Instead of slingshotting to accelerate, slingshotting to decelerate to a lower velocity is just as easy, it suffices to have the craft approach still parallel to the planet's orbit, but going in from the opposite direction. Conservation of kinetic energy, angular momentum, and linear momentum come together to either take away or add to the momentum of the spacecraft depending on what direction the approach relative to the motion of the planet is. |
