What's between the galaxies?

Have there been any definitive studies of what if anything is between
the galaxies. I assume, because we can see galaxies ten billion miles
away, that if there is "something" there must not be much of it. Is it
a perfect vacuum?

Zero of anything per cubic centimeter (except maybe virtual
particles, but they don't count, or do they?)
