Cosmic Pizza in a Non Gamma Burst Part of the Universe!
*:-.,_,.-:*'``'*:-.,_,.-:

Greetings Fellow Stargazer,

You and I live in a very dangerous Universe. Our tiny home planet is at
risk from many extraterrestrial threats: asteroid strikes (my greatest
fear), solar flares, rogue black holes, supernovae and more. So should
we add gamma ray bursts (those most powerful explosions in the Universe)
to this list? Even 10 seconds of radiation from one of these events
would be a deadly setback to life on Earth. Longer would destroy
everything!

Not to worry. One could prove mathematically that as long as pizza is
being eaten here on Earth, there will be little chance of gamma ray burst
arriving here. Well maybe it is because of another reason: When you
look at the types of galaxies gamma ray bursts tend to occur in, you find
that theyıre always in small, messy, very irregular galaxies that have a
very low mass (which we don't find in our Milky Way except possibly in
someone's you know messy room). The reason for the lack of gamma bursts
here is that the Milky Way has lots of metals in it. Now when astronomers
talk about metals, they donıt really mean things like aluminum or iron,
but they really mean anything heavier than hydrogen or helium. And so in
order to have life, you have to have carbon, pizza and oxygen and
elements like that which are very rare in the little galaxies that have
gamma ray bursts going off. Sooooo what you can deduce when you look at
it is that little galaxies are vital to creating gamma ray bursts because
what you need basically is very massive stars that form black holes, and
itıs much easier to do that in these little galaxies that have very few
metals. Essentially it means that although weıve had gamma ray bursts in
the past, they just donıt happen in galaxies like our own is today.
Bottom line is, if you have pizza on your planet, you're safe.

Speaking of pizza, bring some pizza to this month's Star Party and we can
burst some pizza into us, look up and find some other cosmic events to
marvel at! So find a couple of beach chairs, something to munch on,
something to drink.... and bring them to this month's Star Party, where
telescopes and pizzas will abound.

Nix and Hydra

A pair of small moons that NASA's Hubble Space Telescope discovered
orbiting Pluto now have official names: Nix and Hydra. Photographed by
Hubble in 2005, Nix and Hydra are roughly 5,000 times fainter than Pluto
and are about two to three times farther from Pluto than its large moon,
Charon, which was discovered in 1978.

In mythology, Nix is the goddess of darkness and night, befitting a
satellite orbiting distant Pluto, the god of the underworld. Nix is also
the mother of Charon, relevant to the giant impact believed to have
created Plutoıs three satellites, indicating Charon was borne of the
material from which Nix formed. Hydra is the terrifying monster with the
body of a serpent and nine heads, befitting the outermost moon of Pluto,
the ninth planet in the solar system.

Planets versus Plutons

The world's astronomers, under the auspices of the International
Astronomical Union (IAU), have concluded two years of work defining the
difference between "planets" and the smaller "solar system bodies" such
as comets and asteroids. If the definition is approved by the astronomers
gathered 14-25 August 2006 at the IAU General Assembly in Prague, our
Solar System will include 12 planets, with more to come: eight classical
planets that dominate the system, three planets in a new and growing
category of "plutons" - Pluto-like objects - and Ceres Pluto remains a
planet and is the prototype for the new category of "plutons."

AU President Ron Ekers explains the rational behind a planet definition:
"Modern science provides much more knowledge than the simple fact that
objects orbiting the Sun appear to move with respect to the background of
fixed stars. For example, recent new discoveries have been made of
objects in the outer regions of our Solar System that have sizes
comparable to and larger than Pluto. These discoveries have rightfully
called into question whether or not they should be considered as new
'planets.' "

According to the new draft definition, two conditions must be satisfied
for an object to be called a "planet." First, the object must be in orbit
around a star, while not being itself a star. Second, the object must be
large enough (or more technically correct, massive enough) for its own
gravity to pull it into a nearly spherical shape. The shape of objects
with mass above 5 x 1020 kg and diameter greater than 800 km would
normally be determined by self-gravity, but all borderline cases would
have to be established by observation.

If the proposed Resolution is passed, the 12 planets in our Solar System
will be Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Ceres, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus,
Neptune, Pluto, Charon and 2003 UB313. The name 2003 UB313 (or its more
popular nickname "Xena") is provisional, as a "real" name has not yet
been assigned to this object. A decision and announcement of a new name
are likely not to be made during the IAU General Assembly in Prague, but
at a later time. The naming procedures depend on the outcome of the
Resolution vote. There will most likely be more planets announced by the
IAU in the future. Currently a dozen "candidate planets" are listed on
IAU's "watchlist" which keeps changing as new objects are found and the
physics of the existing candidates becomes better known.

The Wanderers (The Planets) this Month

Mercury (about magnitude *1) is dropping deep into the glow of sunrise,
getting lower every morning. Look for it below and perhaps a bit left of
bright Venus. On the 20th and 21st, dimmer Saturn glows only about 1°
from Mercury; try binoculars.

Venus (magnitude *3.8) is the "Morning Star" very low in the
east-northeast as dawn grows bright.
Mars is lost in the sunset for this season. (And if your friends and
relatives are sending you the e-mail chain letter about Mars becoming
amazingly big and bright this month BUT NOT AS BIG AS THE MOON AS AN
URBAN LEGEND EAMIL STATES.

Jupiter (magnitude *2.0, in Libra) shines brightly in the southwest at
dusk, but it's getting lower every week. The earlier in twilight you look
and the farther south you live the higher Jupiter will appear in your
sky and the sharper the telescopic view will be. Jupiter now sets hardly
more than an hour after dark.

Saturn is very low in the glow of sunrise, but it's getting a little
higher daily. On the 20th and 21st it's only about 1° from brighter
Mercury as seen at the time of dawn for the Americas (try binoculars). On
the mornings of the 26th and 27th, Mercury is less than 1° from Venus as
seen from the Americas.

Uranus (magnitude 5.7, in Aquarius) and Neptune (magnitude 7.8, in
Capricornus) are well up in the southeast to south as evening grows late.

Pluto (magnitude 14, in Serpens Cauda) is high in the south-southwest
right after dark.

"Xena," or officially 2003 UB313, (magnitude 19, in Cetus) is high in the
south during early-morning hours. This is the "tenth planet" discovered a
year ago, slightly larger than Pluto

Star Party Directions
(http://www.hawastsoc.org/directions/dillingham.html)

To reach the Dillingham observing site, take the H2 to the end at
Schofield Barracks. Drive past Schofield and follow the signs to
Waialua. At the Y intersection at Waialua, bear left and pass under
the bridge. Drive out of town a few miles until you reach Dillingham
Airfield. Dillingham is several miles long. It has three gates. You
need to drive to the far end to the third gate (marked as Gate 1 on
the color map). When you enter the gate, the road will curve left
behind some hangars. It will then take you through a very sharp S
curve. 1/4 mile beyond that is a stop sign in the middle of nowhere.
Turn right at the stop sign, and you will be there. You can find me
by looking for the big red telescope in the corner with a table with
lots of pizza on it.

You will need to reach the site before sunset in order to find the
gate open!!!

A few words on light. We try to maintain dark conditions at the site.
Therefore we have certain rules about light. First, no white
flashlights. The only flashlights that you should use are not too
bright, red ones.

When entering and exiting the site, do not use headlights. Some cars
now can't turn off their headlights. If you have a car like that
please park nearer the windsock then the telescopes. Point it away
from the telescopes. Headlights make you lose your night vision for
up to 30 minutes. It immediately ruins any astro photography that
might be in progress.

Bring some warm clothes, something to sit on, some real powerful bug
spray, a dim or red covered flashlight and some munches to share with
your friends.

Remember there is an absolute need to remain clear of the runway, and
anyone attending the star party needs to remain in the immediate star
party area. Do not be wandering around in areas where we are not
permitted. Especially near any planes (parked or moving)!
