I lived in Asia for some years. I remember how disappointed we were when the smoke issuing from bush that burned, yet was not consumed, turned out to be a dense swarm of tiny flying insects. That didn't prevent pilgrims from visiting the Buddhist Monastery in which the bush was located for weeks afteward to make offerings to the bush. And the time that the blood issuing from the feet of the god Brahma turned out to be juice from a melting cherry Popsicle that a pilgrim had carelessly discarded. It was a hot day. I remember, too, the offerings placed at the foot of the frangipani tree in my garden -- it is Bad to plant a frangipani in a private garden, as they should only grow in cemetaries and temple compounds. The landlord had the beautiful tree removed on the day I moved out. Davoud -- usenet *at* davidillig dawt com |
