Media 8 To Produce "Challenger" Directed by Philip Kaufman
http://www.spaceref.com/news/viewpr.html?pid=19931 M8 Entertainment Inc. (TSX: MEE.MV.A and MEE.SV.B), a leading film entertainment company engaged in the production, financing, acquisition, and worldwide licensing of theatrical feature films in a variety of genres, announced today that its principal subsidiary Media 8 will co-produce, finance, and distribute the feature film project "Challenger." Written by Nicole Perlman, the film will be directed by Philip Kaufman ("The Right Stuff," "The Unbearable Lightness of Being") and will star Academy Award nominee David Strathairn ("Good Night, and Good Luck") as world-renowned scientist and Nobel Laureate Richard Feynman. Media 8 Entertainment will co-produce "Challenger" in association with Code Entertainment and Carol Baum Prods. Carol Baum, Rick Berg and Peter Kaufman will serve as producers on the film. Media 8 is selling international rights to the film at the Cannes Film Market. -- end excerpt -- -- rk, Just an OldEngineer "The number of people having any connection with the project must be restricted in an almost vicious manner. Use a small number of good people." -- Kelly Johnson in Skunk Works |

Karen Allen was Christa McAuliffe. Barry Bostwick was Dick Scobee. Peter Boyle from the sitcom "Everybody Loves Raymond" played the engineer Roger Boisjoly. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099237/ -- David |

oups.com... i wouldnt watch it, to hopefully discourage future movies like this. at least they waited a long time, unlike that 9 11 movie Bob, teh producers of United 93 worked very closely with teh relatives. IIRC a few of them were disgruntled, but hte vast majority supported the effort. Which, if anybody hasn't seen it, is a very evenhanded, gripping, utterly compelling look at what happened in teh aircraft (as far as anybody can tell), in the FAA centers, and at NEADS that morning. *Everyone* should see this film, just like everyone should see the "9/11 film" that came out several years ago (and if that's the one you were complaining about...one of the filmmakers was *in* the North tower when the South tower collapsed, and was almost buried alive, as was the fireman narrator, while the second brother was just down the street aned was engulfed by debris); they *earned* the right to cash in, *they*were*there*). United 93 isn't sensationalism, it isn't playing off our emotions, it isn't money-grubbing in teh slightest. Yes, teh producers and investors will make a lot of money off it. No, that's not a bad thing. The only negatives I can say about the movie are 1) if you are susceptible to motion sickness, be prepared. It uses handheld cameras extensively, and the POV zooms all over the place. I spent the last half staring at the side wall of teh theater and looking out of the corner of my eye at what was happening onscreen because my gyros were tumbling badly. 2) during the buildup the movie cuts from the passengers and crew, to FAA operation, to individual controllers, to the battle staff at NEADS. We see the chaos, conflicting reports, and lack of any kind of a clear picture of what the hell was happening, all in real time. But once the United 93 passengers start devising their plot to attack the hijackers, the story focuses entirely on what's going on inside the aircraft. Which is the whole point of the movie, granted, but the intercutting to other places added a nice touch of context and fleshed out the picture. The sudden lack of that was a little jarring I thought, and turned the last fifteen minutes into just another action movie. For instance, there was a C-130 that happened to be over DC when American 77 slammed into the Pentagon, and then witnessed United 93 going down in Shanksville. Would have been nice to have their story included. But other than that, this is an extremely well-done work that deserves a lot of credit and a lot of ticket sales. DO yourslef a favor and go see it while it's in theaters. -- Terrell Miller Many scientists recall President Dwight Eisenhower's warnings about the danger of the rising postwar military-industrial complex, notes Mr. Happer, now a Princeton physicist. In the same speech, however, Eisenhower also warned: "We must also be alert to the equal and opposite danger that public policy could itself become the captive of a scientific-technological elite. It is the task of statesmanship to mold, to balance, and to integrate these and other forces, new and old, within the principles of our democratic system...." -The Week |

If you think about it, there wouldn't be any historical action movies if that were a primary concern. Or books. Or News. Or TV. Oh well, shut it all down and pretend it never happened. That way we can go without learning anything from our failures and do them again! |
