emotions are "cognitive-affective" states, save for milliseconds
to seconds of hypothalamic activity that can occur in the
absence of thalamic processing signalling threat (see Ledoux,

expressions/facial analysis in particular, and he has never
presumed to say that the only emotions that exist in reality are
those which are revealed through facial expressions. How
ignorant of you to assume so, Brad.

Read something scholarly, preferably dated after 1980, and more
advanced than your battered Intro text book published in the
early 70's. Find out what emotions are made of. Read LeDoux's
work on the neurological underpinnings of fear and anxiety. Then
look up Seligman and his theory of learned helplessness: an
empirical theory based on experimental replication and extension
of Ivan Pavlov's work; one covered in every introductory text
book published after 1975, and one which every one of my Psych
101 students knows cold, but you don't.

Then look up Seligman's "Positive Psychology" and "learned
helplessness and depression" and "learned helplessness and
battered women's syndrome". Read Seligman's work to understand
why it is common knowledge that helplessness is, contrary to
your silly bleating, an emotion. Learn about its role in
depressive disorders and self-defeating behavior.

Then **** off. This discussion is for grown ups, not needy
