I've been thinking a lot about the situation, and one of my friends reminded me that it's much better to fight evil by doing good than by fighting it directly. Since i'm just a naive and kooky unscientist, i've pretty much decided not to take any direct action, legal or otherwise, against anyone on UseNet at this time. It's because i really believe that people who are actually good and who have good intentions can often commit evil behaviour without realizing it. So i've decided to continue discussing astronomy in my favorite newsgroup. This is my way of fighting the evil that is being done here... by making progress in the good. I've been thinking a lot about the situation, and one of my friends reminded me that it's much better to fight evil by doing good than by fighting it directly. That's what my parole officer used to say too! I have to agree with that philosophy. Sometimes it's not so easy to do good though. Doing bad can be really really fun. Since i'm just a naive and kooky unscientist, i've pretty much decided not to take any direct action, legal or otherwise, against anyone on UseNet at this time. That's probably best, really. No one who has tried one of those lawsuits has ever gotten anything out of it but a lot of catcalling and japery. It's because i really believe that people who are actually good and who have good intentions can often commit evil behaviour without realizing it. It is hard for us to say what on usenet can truly be construed as evil. For indeed, though good conversation may be disrupted, did it really matter to begin with? From Painius:
...i really believe that people who are actually good and who have good intentions can often commit evil behaviour without realizing it. Well, when someone's acting out in a manner that's consistently and gleefully malevolent, as demonstrated here by the sociopathetic 'maggot' crowd, it's hard to believe they're doin' it without realizing it. Then there's people like OG and Zinni, who can be a royal PITA, but are basically good and decent people. ..one of my friends reminded me that it's much better to fight evil by doing good than by fighting it directly. Such Gandihan / Franciscan pacificism may work with people who are basically good and decent. Not so sure it'll work with rabid dogs, though. :-) So i've decided to continue discussing astronomy in my favorite newsgroup. This is my way of fighting the evil that is being done here... by making progress in the good. Ah yes, "it's better to light a candle than to curse the darkness." What's a good astronomy-related subject to toss into the ring? How about the meteorological dynamics sustaining the great red spot on Jupiter? What keeps that sucka goin' anyhow? oc |
