The "5 each" comment has the qualifier "about", which means it could be 4 flights each, or 6 flights each just as easily. Besides the debris in engine and PAL ramp might slow things even more Might not. We've seen glitches like this throughout the Shuttle program. Sometimes they result in launch delays, sometimes not. the program has a long history of delays, espically after a accident. does anyone REALLY believe that RTF wouldnt bring more safety groundings before 2010? It's possible. The shuttle has had some bad runs, where several problems came up at about the same time. But it has also had some good runs, where things have generally worked pretty well for a few years at a time. It could just be that the pendulum is about to swing back and that the shuttle will have a good run in the lead up to its retirement. --Chris |

If you look back at the good runs they were a result of lax safety
rules. they flew with known hazards, to meet the schedule. today theres overwhelming schedule pressure, but because of columbia, management woiuldnt be able to ignore issues. safety groundings are going to be a continious issue. on the other hand perhaps the number of flights flown between now and 2010 are really meaningless? since this article says that even with atlantis retirement there will be no job cuts. Theres a chance nasa might be happy with one flight a year, just to keep the workers on the payroll? realize every flight is a risk of dead crew that will certinally end the program with that event! so to keep the workforce together a very low flight rate might be best? you must admit its a interesting way to look at the issue |

You're backpeddling from your sensationalist message headers again, Bob. Spaceflight Now does not say there will be only 15 more flights. That may very well be true, but it is not the reality ("15 flights now Max") you claim it to be. It's wacko interpretations like this thread of yours that really cause you to lose any sort of credibility in this group. You're the National Enquirer of sci.space. Brian |

The article says
before the program is terminated in 2010, NASA's three remaining orbiters can only expect to fly about five missions each |

Not um...5, 6 and 6. Or...5, 5, and 6. Or hell, 4, 6, 6...or, 4, 4 and 4... Nope . "About five" equals five for each orbiter. Tops. Can't possibly go over that. -A.L. |
