Default Egress into space of the ISS expedition 9 crew

June 25, 2004. Korolev, Moscow Region.

On egress into space of the ISS expedition 9 crew.

In the course of implementation of operations under the program of egress
into space which envisaged performance of repair work to recover
functionality of control moment gyroscope-gyrodyne CMG 2 on the American
segment of the International Space station (ISS) the expedition 9 crew
(ISS-9) consisting of Russian cosmonaut Gennady Padalka (commander) and
American astronaut Michael (Mike) Fincke (flight engineer) was forced to
stop the program implementation and to return to the station because of a
pressure drop in the main oxygen bottle of the Michael Fincke's spacesuit.
The pressure drop was detected by telemetry data in 10 min after opening of
the exit hatch of the Russian docking module Pirs performed at 1:56 Moscow
time.
The decision to stop the egress was made by the mission management in
accordance with the results of the on-line analysis of the existing
situation.

All possible causes of the problem (leakage of the oxygen valve in the
spacesuit plug after its disconnection from the onboard power supply system,
a failure-to close of the injector valve, etc.) are being analyzed by a
specially established investigation board. The decision on a repeat egress
to recover the gyrodyne functionality will be made with respect to its
conclusions and recommendations.
