Default Weird passage in a book

http://www.chapters.indigo.ca/item.a...n=books&zxac=1

This guy wrote a book called, "War" that became a PBS series.
In the book above, he makes reference to balloon tests done at 41km
up. The balloons brought back microbe samples. According to "some"
the microbes must have come from space as it was impossible using
known wind circulation to account for them at that altitude.
This was used to further the idea of pan spermia.
Does anyone know if they ever tested the genetics of these microbes?
The book didn't go into that.

I'd say "some" are into wishful thinking.

Let's use a little Occam's Razor here.

You're in the atmosphere of the only place in the universe that's known to
be full of life.

You know there's air, because your balloon can get that high.

If there are microbes in the air, doesn't it seem rather more likely they
came in some fashion from the planet's surface, rather than from Outer
Space?

And Occam's Razor can be the path to many misanalisys. Personally from
what little data that has been put forth in these post there is
insufficient data to deny any potential source of the microbes.

TO conclude or fail to consider alternatives has already forced one to
a conclusion that may or may not be the right one.

Well, he *did* say it was a *weird passage*. And Gwynne Dyer's
_political_ views are weird enough too... recently, he asked why the
U.S. is trying to provoke China into a war, in an article in a Canadian
magazine.
