Default moon - rainbow???

Seeing Pete Lawrence's moon pix reminded me of what I was thinking watching
the moon last night.

It was very bright with a halo because of light cloud and I got to wondering
if the moon can produce a rainbow when it's that bright.

I've not heard of it happening but maybe the more experienced have some
comments as to its possibility?

Cheers

Laurence

Yes it can. See:

By strange coincidence somebody in the uk.sci.weather group has just
mentioned seeing a "cloudbow". He also pasted the following link that
explained what he was seeing.

Another one of the phenomen mentioned on the page (follow the "rainbows"
link) is a "moonbow".

An honour indeed! I need to do another version without the text and
having the correct aspect ratio for a desktop. If I get a moment, I'll
sort one out later.

Here's a bigger version for editing and cropping to suit (~350k).

I have seen a moonbow and the circumstances are as follows:
- lowish moon but cleared of the horizon murk.
- passing showers.

The bow will be seen at the antilunar point. Some might see weak
clours but I did not, just grayscale variants.

Last night produced moondogs which may be a different refraction effect
to the halo you saw.
