I'd be grateful if anyone could tell me if I have identified the Little
Dipper correctly in this constellation page. My school currently has no tutor for Astronomy and I simply and wondering if I have my starting point correct - I have outlined Little Dipper in light green. Constellation jpg in link below. Thanks for any help - sorry I cannot post in active html link: http://photos.yafro.com/pics3/i/2005...6d290_full.jpg Carlton |

Your star field seems to correspond well to what would be seen looking
south on 15 Jan at 15:00 EST (UT -5): http://www.skyviewcafe.com/skyview.php The applet also identifies star names with a cursor touch. Polaris is centered just above the middle at a latitude of 51=B029' N. The default location is Greenwich Observatory. BTW, if you are seeing the *north* pole star, you are definitely NOT looking 'south' are the caption in your picture suggests. It should perhaps state that 'the bottom of the picture is the southern horizon.' Tom Davidson Richmond, VA |

BTW, you correctly identified the Little Dipper.
The confirmation should come from the Big Dipper (aka "The Plough" or "Charles' Wain"), off to the left, positioned such that they appear to be pouring into each other. Tom Davidson Richmond, VA |
