I'm not a Bush fan, but there's plenty of blame to go around here. As
the writer points out, the Federal Government's response was late and inadequate. However, the local government's planning was also inadequate. The levees were long known to be unable to handle a hurricane of this size, and local newspaper articles had pointed this out. Fleets of school busses sat parked in their lots during the evacuation. And while my heart goes out to those who lost everything, some of this is symptomatic of a population that has come to expect government to take care of them in every way. The local, state, and federal governments can't completely protect us from massive natural disasters or the predators we tolerate among us in our society. There will be plenty of time later to analyse what went wrong, and thousands of gallons of ink will be used to place blame. But now is the time to help the victims of this horror recover, and attempt to find ways to rebuild in ways to withstand inevitable future disasters. Marty |

However, the local government's planning was also inadequate. I have to agree .. though a bit more empathy and rapid *action* by the federal government would have been helpful (and no doubt saved many lives). After all they do have a lot of resources they could have brought in. This is the richest and most powerful nation on the planet after all. *** I rather doubt there would have been this sort of delay if a Hurricane would have hit Kennebunkport. No way would all those people be left alone to fend for themselves for this many days. This brings up many questions. And while my heart goes out to those who lost everything, some of this is symptomatic of a population that has come to expect government to take care of them in every way. True. A little bit of personal and professional accountability would be refreshing, esp amongst government officials. I find the lack of this an equally troubling trend in society.. no one is willing to admit problems or mistakes (these happen, we are all human), and quick to point fingers elsewhere. (I see this with students too, turn in an assignment late, but don't take responsibility for doing so ..) There will be plenty of time later to analyse what went wrong, and thousands of gallons of ink will be used to place blame. But now is the time to help the victims of this horror recover, and attempt to find ways to rebuild in ways to withstand inevitable future disasters. Yup, first things first, there are still today people needing to be rescued. 4 years after 9/11 are we really better prepared to deal with disaster (man made or natural)? This does not instill a great deal of confidence in me. Ok, this is sufficiently OT now, I'll stop. Esmail ps: I read somewhat that these sort of evacuations are mandatory and enforced by the state in Cuba .. aside from feasibility, it does make you wonder. |
